Federally Employed Women
The Federal Women's Program (FWP) was established in 1967 when President Lyndon B. Johnson signed Executive Order 11375 and added sex as a prohibited form of discrimination. The FWP has a primary responsibility to identify barriers to the hiring and advancement of women and to enhance employment opportunities for women in every area of federal service. Guidance for the FWP was originally provided by the Civil Service Commission (now OPM). In 1978 the program responsibility was transferred to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). The FWP is an integral part of the overall Civil Rights/Equal Opportunity Program.
1968
Thirteen women, all recognizing the need to establish equal opportunities for women in federal employment, joined together in establishing "TOO FEW-the Organization of Federally Employed Women," and then simplified to FEW. They elected a steering committee and began the nuts-and-bolts work of making their vision a reality. Steve Harrison, FEW's first male member, installed Allie Latimer, FEW's first President.
Del Rio Chapter #105
By 1971, there were 20 local chapters of FEW across the United States. Our local Del Rio Chapter #105 created a little cookbook which has helped to preserve the memory of this amazing endeavor to allow women to be part of the federally-funded workforce. Our little cookbook was published in June of 1977. The names of the women (and two supportive gentlemen) included therein areDora Alcala
